Governors

Message from the Chair, Wendy Cairns

Welcome to the Governors’ site

As we enter 2016, the school is focused on the Ofsted inspection that was completed just before Christmas. After our very positive 2010 report (when the school was considered ‘good’), the contrasting negative report just received was, of course, a major setback – although we were already aware of the areas of concern that were highlighted. The priority is to address those issues as soon, and as effectively, as possible, to ensure that Yateley continues to live up to its reputation as a great school, providing the best possible education for your children.

To do this, a number of processes are being put in place, including:

  • An action plan, which will be reviewed and monitored by the Governors every 2-3 weeks
  • Weekly meetings between the head teacher and senior staff to ensure progress
  • The use of external advice – including working with a national schools inspector allocated to the school to help achieve improvement
  • Formally gathering parental feedback – probably via a survey later in the academic year

A number of key initiatives are being developed. Those already in progress include:

  • A strengthened behavioural policy, with a zero tolerance approach to low-level disruption, enforced by measures such as greater use of behaviour points.
  • A realignment of the science department, including reorganisation to maximise the use of different staff strengths.
  • A more focused approach to modern languages, to increase student confidence and competence in developing language skills.

Meanwhile, we also wish to retain the existing strengths of the school. As highlighted in the recent report, these include:

  • A strong sixth form, that provides high level Key Stage 5 education;
  • An award-winning creative and performing arts department, that provides unique opportunities for student development; and
  • A culture in which students feel safe and secure, enabling them to focus on their studies.

Within two years, the school will be re-inspected, to see if it has progressed from ‘needs improvement’ back to ‘good’.  Governors and staff are working hard to ensure improvement happens as soon as possible. We will provide updates of progress in due course.
